Iceland’s Route One

‘Some of the most diverse, dramatic, ethereal landscapes that you’re likely to find in the Northern Hemisphere.’

Iceland’s Route One is a ring road around the country and approximately 825 miles long. It offers some of the most diverse, dramatic, ethereal landscapes that you’re likely to find in the Northern Hemisphere.

The beauty of this relatively small country is that you can have two very different holidays here. Go in Spring or Summer and you’ll have the natural elements in their spectacular raw colours, with waterfall rainbows, bubbling mud-pools that look like chocolate fountains, glacial lakes and rivers, volcanoes and of course puffins and other birds on their migratory route along with the seals, whales and the indigenous Icelandic ponies.

Alternatively visit in winter and you will have a different adventure altogether. Iceland is a winter wonderland of Northern Lights, glacier hiking, ice caves, snow-mobiling and outdoor bathing in some of the best natural thermal, mineral rich waters in the world.

We would recommend a minimum 10 days to complete Route One entirely and do this country the justice it deserves. Almost everything you’ll want to see is natural and you can literally see, hear and smell our living planet. A few of the sights require a bit more effort than others, but we guarantee you will never be disappointed, so if you want to hike or super jeep to the interior, go whale watching or dive between the Eurasion and North American tectonic plates, it is worth a few extra days.

Route One doesn’t include the Westfjords, which is a miniature version of the island as a whole, so if you only have a week, this is the ideal option for your ‘journey to the centre of the Earth’. But whichever option you choose, you will be rewarded with the most beautiful, serene landscape that never fails to be awe-inspiring or breath-taking.
