Salzburg Alps

‘Stunning mountains, beautiful valleys and chocolate-box towns’

Enjoy Austria’s Salzburg Alps with stunning snow-capped mountains, beautiful green valleys and charming chocolate-box towns. The alpine roads, that are closed throughout the winter, open up in the spring to reveal wild-flower meadows, towering peaks and glistening glaciers all visible from the roadside.

The highest mountain in Austria is the Grossglockner (3,798 metres) and it is home to one of the best alpine roads in Europe. The 30-mile winding pass boasts 36 bends up an ascent of 2500 metres. Not for the feint-hearted this road rewards drivers with picturesque views of the valley below and the Pasterze glacier. This route can be completed as a circular, returning via the road-train and the village of Bad-Gastein, or those with good brakes can enjoy the view on the way back down the Grossglockner again.

The pretty town of Kitzbuhel is a great base from which to explore the area, with its numerous cafes and bars which are perfect for a refreshment stop and to watch the world pass by. From here it is also possible to take the cable-car up to the Hahnenkamm Olympic ski run, which in the summer offers plenty of walking trails with spectacular views.

For further adventures in your car, nature lovers can drive to the Hohe Tauern National Park, the Krimmler Waterfall and the Kaprun Valley or for those seeking culture the city of Salzburg provides history and music in equal measure.

Consider combing this road-trip with an amazing motorsport event. The Formula 1 Austrian Grand-Prix is hosted at the Red Bull Ring near the town of Spielberg. Thousands of race fans will attend the race to watch the world’s best drivers compete in the world’s top race cars.
