India

‘An endlessly fascinating country’

India is an endlessly fascinating country that challenges and surprises even the most seasoned traveller.

Stretched between the golden beaches of the Indian Ocean and the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, India is packed with both natural and material man made sights to see. It is home some of the worldā€™s most iconic monuments, temples, monasteries, frenetic cities, national parks, palaces and sprawling markets.

Knowing where to start is tricky, as its highlights are spread over such a vast area.Ā On your first trip, you may find the best route to be the so-called ā€˜Golden Triangleā€™; visiting the colonial capital Delhi, then the Taj Mahal at Agra, and on to Jaipur, the colourful capital of Rajasthan.

In Delhi you will get a first hand experience of one of the most populous regions in the world, split in half with New Delhi to the west and Old Delhi to the east. It has has a burgeoning arts and crafts industry with many magnificent monuments; countless performing arts venues and excellent cuisine.

After spending time in Delhi your next stop should be Agra, home of the Taj Mahal. It’s is a city on the banks of the river Yamuna and is worth spending a few days in. Beyond the Taj Mahal ā€“ easily its most famous landmark – trips to the Agra Fort and the Mehtab Bagh Gardens which in turn provides a spectacular view of the Taj Mahal, perfect for photographs.

Jaipur is the final stop on the triangle tour. Jaipur, known as the Pink City, is the capital of State Rajasthan and is increasingly popular with tourists. The Amer, Jaigrah and Nahargarh Forts all deserve places on your itinerary, as is the City Palace which has stood since 1727.

And that’s just one suggested holiday plan. Don’t expect to absorb all India has to offer in one visit; the country is best appreciated over multiple visits.
